This musical composition is inspired by The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a collection of verses, attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048—1131), translated from Persian to English by Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883). Although an interesting piece, this is one of the prolific Hovhaness’s minor works. For Hovhaness at his best, listeners might look to other works such as Symphony No. 2: Mysterious Mountain (his most well known work), and Prayer of St. Gregory.
